How to Style: Shelving
Thinking about a shelf refresh? Shelf styling is a popular topic that we often get questions about. While it can be tricky, it can also be a seamless process that you can often use to redesign your shelves anytime you're looking for a change.
Step 1: Create a blank space.
It may seem like a lot more work, but clearing your shelves will allow you to place items quickly and without overwhelm.
Step 2: Gather the items you'd like to feature.
Choose items you love: old and new. Different heights and textures are key.
Step 3: Group items by size and/or type.
Before placing your items on your shelf, make piles of like-sized things. This will allow you to sift through your items quickly when a particular-sized item is needed.
For example:
+ Large/tall items: Vases, candlesticks, artwork, baskets/boxes.
+ Medium items: Pots, structural pieces.
+ Small/short items: Bowls, candles, candleholders, personal trinkets.
Step 4: Start placing.
Starting with the top left corner of your shelf, begin placing your items. Choosing a large item and pairing it with other smaller items will create a focal point and make the shelf feel seamless. Also, selecting a single object (a basket or box) will create a simplistic, less "busy" look. Continue to move onto the middle section of your shelf and then the bottom right corner.
Step 5: Group the smaller items.
In the untouched spaces on your shelves, begin grouping your medium and smaller items. Stacking books or using low candleholders will create interest, depth, and dimension.
Step 6: Finishing touches.
Wooden beads or personal trinkets are some of our favorite items to add to any "almost finished" space. These final touches bring personality and personalize any place in your home.
